Ethelbert was the son of William H. Brown and Rebecca Townsend. He was an architect and illustrator, educated at Cornell University and Beaux Arts Academy in Paris. His main hobby was painting; his landscapes were often on exhibition. He also conducted classes in sketching for the Chester County Art Association for several years. His wife, May Gill Brown, died in 1933.
