"WILLIAM E. SCULL, EX-PUBLISHER, DIES
Collector of Art Traced Ancestry To 11th Century
William Ellis Scull, member of a notable Philadelphia family and former publisher and antiquarian, died Wednesday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Alexander Biddle, "Leighton House," Bryn Mawr. He was 81.
Mr. Scull, descendant of a family traced back to the 11th Century, will be buried tomorrow afternoon, following funeral services at the Cathedral Church of Christ, Roxborough, of which he was one of the founders and the first Canon Register.
Rt. Rev. Francis M. Taitt, Bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania, will officiate at the services, to be held at 2:30 P. M.
Until his retirement several years ago, Mr. Scull was vice president of the John C. Winston Co., publishers, a post in which he succeeded his father.
During his long life he traveled extensively in all parts of the world, and spent much of his time abroad. He was a collector of art and antiques, and was a friend of the last Grand Duke Nicholas of Russia, and of General Baron Wrangel, leader of the Russian White Army.
Mr. Scull was a graduate of Haverford College in the class of 1883, and was a member of the Philadelphia Club and a charter member of the Merion Cricket Club.
He was a widower, his wife, Mrs. Florence Prall Scull, having died in 1937.
Mr. Scull is survived by Mrs. Biddle, his only daughter. and by two grandsons, Alexander W. Biddle, of New York, and David S. Biddle.
