She first married Andrew Downing who died in the Henry Clay disaster on July 28, 1852 and secondly married Judge John J. Monell. Caroline was the great granddaughter of President John Adams and granddaughter of Abigail "Nabby" Adams Smith, & daughter (namesake) of Caroline Smith De Wint. She is buried next to her first husband.
