Mary J. Melander was 91 and a longtime Wenatchee resident, when she passed away on July 1, 2014. She was born on August 10, 1922, to Charles and Carri (McDaniel) Diggs in Sterling, NE. On December 14, 1940, Mary and Leonard Melander were married in Sterling; she was a farm wife on a farm in Iowa. In 1953, she was confirmed into the St. John's Lutheran Church in Sterling. She belonged to ladies' groups and worked at the church. In December of 1955, Mary, Leonard and their daughter, Sherrel Mae, moved to Wenatchee. In Wenatchee, she owned and operated "Mary's Draperies and Craft" business. Mary and Leonard loved their card parties, touring trips with the Senior Center and traveling back to Nebraska, Branson, MO and Canada.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leonard; brothers, Wesley, Arthur, Roy, Harold, Bobbie and Ray; sisters, Lucil, Pat, Midge and Hazel, all of Nebraska. Survivors include her daughter and son in-law, Sherrel Mae Melander-DeChenne (Bob Harrison); granddaughters, Penny (Rob) Peart, Cyndi (Jim) Timboe; great-grandchildren, Grant, Austin, Kierstin, Evan, Matthew and Catherine, all of Wenatchee.
Memorial Graveside Services will be held at Wenatchee Cemetery on July 11, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. Honored to assist the family, Heritage Memorial Chapel, East Wenatchee.
