SMITH CENTER – A.L. "Babe" Pletcher, age 89, passed away on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at Smith County Long Term Care in Smith Center, KS. He was born the son of W.F. & Emma (Barcus) Pletcher in the Crystal Plains Township in Smith County, KS. He was a farmer.

Survivors include his wife Gladys of the home; a son Dennis (Linda) Pletcher of rural Portis, KS; a daughter Cathy Lanus of rural Smith Center, KS; a brother, Paul (Ginger) Pletcher of Smith Center, KS; a sister Roma (Carl Jr.) Caldwell of Portis, KS; 2 grandsons and 4 great grandchildren.

Celebration of life graveside services will be held at 2:00PM, Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at the Crystal Plains Cemetery, rural Smith Center, KS with Pastor Laura Fricker officiating.

There will be a visitation from 6:00PM until 8:00PM Monday at the Simmons-Rentschler Mortuary in Smith Center.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to Hospice Services of Smith County and can be sent in care of the mortuary.

SMITH CENTER – Abraham Lincoln Pletcher (Babe) was born June 22, 1925 the youngest of 10 children to William & Emma (Barcus) Pletcher in Crystal Plains Township in Smith County Kansas.

He graduated from Lebanon High School in 1943 and then started farming.

He married Gladys Cochran December 26, 1945 in Smith Center, KS. To this union was born two children: Dennis E. and Catherine S.

At this time they expanded their farming operation to include mechanic work for area farmers.

Babe enjoyed building and repairing race cars #56 & #57 with brother in law Junior Chase and good friend Fred Calkins, bowling, hunting, fishing and family trips.

After retiring from farming he continued to help with harvest by running a combine and giving objective advice.

He and Gladys continued to reside on their farm until Feb 2013 when they moved to Smith Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Miles, Marvin, Bill, Blaine and Lloyd; sisters, Ruth Schlatter and Faye Overmiller; Son in law Joseph Lanus.

Those mourning his loss are his wife Gladys of 69 years, Son Dennis and wife Linda of Portis. Daughter Catherine S Lanus of Smith Center; grandsons; Daniel Pletcher and wife Julie of Portis, and Allen Lanus of Smith Center; great grandchildren; Logan, Briley, Jade and Dane; a sister Roma (Carl Jr.) Caldwell of Portis, KS; a brother Paul (Ginger) Pletcher of Smith Center, KS; numerous nieces, nephew and many other relatives and friends.
