Herman Pettibone "Pet" Mitchell died Tuesday, April 12, 1960 at his home in Frost Bottom, Tennessee. Pet was born March 7, 1883 in Greene County, Tennessee to Henry C and Margaret Elizabeth Kelley Mitchell. Pet lived in Greene county until about 1902 when he relocated with his family near Jellico, Tennessee. Pet began his career as a coal miner in the mountains of Campbell County, Tennessee. While living in Newcomb, Tennessee Pet married Marie Louise Rigney on December 9, 1908. In about 1925, Pet and his family moved to Harlan County, Kentucky searching for better mining work. Pet and his family stayed until 1932 when they left and moved to Clinton, Tennessee. In 1943, Pet relocated his family to Frost Bottom where he made his home until his death.

Pet was preceded in death by his wife, parents, daughter Elizabeth Mitchell, brothers; James Mitchell, Sam Mitchell, George Washington Mitchell, and Ira David Mitchell, and sister Mary Elizabeth (Mitchell) Davis. Pet is survived by his sons; Hugh Mitchell of Danville, Illinois, Pettibone, Oscar, Auther, and Roscoe Mitchell of Frost Bottom, daughters; Launa Seeber of Frost Bottom, Leona Robbins, Bethelene Wynn of Danville, Illinois, and Ruth Mitchell of Frost Bottom, brother John Franklin Mitchell of Woolridge, Tennessee, and sister Lucy Bell Moncier of Greene county.

Sharp Funeral Home of Oliver Springs had charge of the arrangments. Burial was in Black Oak Cemetery in the Laurel Community near Clinton.
