Butterfield was born July 27, 1918 in Centralia, and grew up in the Bunker Creek area of Adna. He was a member of the Free Methodist Church of Centralia and Centralia Eagles, Aerie 512.
Surviving are his wife, Georgia, at home; three sons, Melvin, Larry and Bruce, all of Centralia; a daughter, Joyce Petersen of Centralia, two brothers, Dale Butterfield of Olympia and Les Palmer of Centralia; three sisters, Merla Hazelwood of Centralia, Helen Salisbury and Leta Johnson, both of Seattle; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
