Martha "Nell" Adams Thompson, 85, of Midland City passed away Saturday, August 13, 2011 at Noland Hospital surrounded by her loving family who sang her home to the Gates of Heaven.

Celebration of life services will be 6 pm Monday, August 15, 2011 at Sylvan Grove United Methodist Church with Dr. Jerry Dooling officiating and Robert Byrd of Sunset Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the church from 4-6pm Monday prior to the services. Flowers are being accepted or memorial donations may be made to the Sylvan Grove Cemetery Fund, c/o Dinah Woodham, 4495 County Rd. 73, Midland City, AL, 36350.

Nell was born October 27, 1925 in Headland, AL to the late DeWitt and Nellie Adams. She attended Business College and worked for 6 months at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. In 1944, she married George Thompson and lived in the Midland City area until her death. She was a loving wife, mother, and Nana. Although her official job was housewife, she was always very involved with farming, raising cattle, and anything George was doing. She was a member of Sylvan Grove United Methodist Church for 65 years and served as Sunday school teacher, board chairman, and numerous other positions over the years. She was also a member of the Johnny Byrd Supper Club and the Lucy Hathaway Cornerstones Prayer Group. She loved her family, church, and friends with all of her heart and she will be truly missed.

Survivors include her husband of 66 years, George Thompson of Midland City; a daughter, Olivia Baldwin of Midland City; sons and daughters-in-law, Wesley and June Thompson of Midland City, and Paul and Becky Thompson of Wilmington, DE; 6 grandchildren, Angie Barefield, Matt Barefield (Lori), Julie Shaver (Woodie), Gina Adams, Jill Bruhn (Adam), all of Midland City, Jana Gindhart (Joey), Kaley Thompson, both of Wilmington, DE; 10 great-grandchildren, Stephen Elliott, Katie Tidwell, Judson Thompson, Maccie Bruhn, Cole Adams, Hayden Adams, Ella Brooke Barefield, Allie Claire Barefield, Joshua Gindhart, and John Wesley Shaver; sisters-in-law, Gladys Adams Howell (Crawford), Jenny Linderman, Betty Jo West, Carolyn Bowden, and Effie Thompson; a brother-in-law Franklin Thompson; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special friend Ruby Malone.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Johnny Byrd Supper Club and the Lucy Hathaway Cornerstones Prayer Group.
