According to a published Knapp family history written in 1911 by his granddaughter Emma Leona Knapp Hall, Asa dug the first grave at the cemetery along Pierrepont. But when he died unexpectedly in 1807, Asa became the second person buried at Elderkin.
Among the Adsit's neighbors in Potsdam was the family of Orrin Deming. His daughter Mary died in 1823 and was buried in a grave at the Willow street cemetery. In October 1914, workmen laying a water pipe on lower Willow street accidentally dug up four coffins and some human remains and artifacts. One of these was the long-buried headstone of little Mary Deming. Beneath it lay her coffin, which contained a skull and a number of small bones. Chloe Adsit died in 1827, and her infant sister Laura Ann followed her in 1828. Both girls could have been buried in the Knowles (Village) cemetery, or else at Elderkin near their grandfather, Asa Knapp (Mary Wright Knapp Raynsford didn't die until 1845). Both girls' remains would have been transferred to Bayside cemetery, following those of their grandparents.
