R. Aschleman Instantly Killed

Rudolph Aschleman was instantly killed last Tuesday afternoon by being run over with a wagon heavily loaded with grain. The accident happened about a mile north of town on the old Bennington road, the particulars of which are about as follows:

Mr. Aschleman was sitting on a sack of grain at the front end of the wagon, driving his team. In passing over a rut in the road the sack on which he was sitting started to slide from the load. Instead of stopping the team, he attempted to drive with one hand and pull the sack back with the other. In doing this the reins became slack and the team started up suddenly, and Mr. Aschleman was thrown to the ground. One of the front wheels passed diagonally across his chest, and it is believed that the weight of the load ruptured his heart.

Mr. Aschleman’s 18 year old son, who was riding on the rear of the load, hurriedly climbed over the sacks, down onto the wagon tongue, got hold of the lines, stopped the horses, tied them to the fence and ran back to where his father was lying. Seeing that his father was badly injured, the lad hurried to a field nearby and informed George Stephens of what had happened. When Mr. Stephens and the boy arrived at Mr. Aschleman’s side, life was extinct.

Word was sent into town as quickly as possible and a conveyance secured to take the lifeless body to the Aschleman home, at the mouth of Montpelier canyon. The news of his death came as an awful blow to Mrs. Aschleman and the other children and the family have the deepest sympathy of the entire community.

Mr. Aschleman was 44 years of age. He was very industrious and by hard work had acquired quite a comfortable home. He is survived by a widow and five children. Mr. Aschleman carried insurance to the amount of $1,000 in the Brotherhood of American Yoemen. His funeral services were held from the First Ward meeting house yesterday afternoon.

In connection with his tragic death the Examiner wished to state that there is no truth in the report which was circulated Tuesday evening to the effect that the accident was caused by Mr. Aschleman’s team being frightened at an automobile, which was driven by Fred Vogel. The story was probably started from the fact that Mr. Vogel and party were driving out that road about that time, but they did not arrive at the scene of the accident until fully ten minutes after it had occurred.
