John Louis McCleskey, the first child of Benjamin Green McCleskey and Martha Mahulda Boyd , was born 9 Sep 1831 in Hall Co.,, Ga., and died about 1900 near Paris, Texas. His father was born 26 Jan 1812 in Tennessee. (according to the 1850 Census of Hall Co.,, Ga. In the 1880 Census of Coryell Co., Texas, John L. McCleskey gave his father's birth place as Georgia.) His mother was b. 9 May 1813. He d. 19 April 1865 and Mahulda d. 20 Jan. 1898. Both (?) are buried at Alta Vista Cemetery, Gainesville, Ga. John L. married Emily Narcissus Jackson in Hall Co., (?) Ga., about 1853. She was b. 13 June 1835. After the birth of their first two children they moved to Cherokee Co.,, Alabama., and in 1868 family tradition) moved with two brothers of John L., to Texas. The two brothers, Warren B. and George W., settled in Parker County, near Weatherford; John Louis settled for a time in Tarrant County, near Ft. Worth. He was a carpenter and freighter; he built many houses for settlers moving into the area, and made caskets for the dead. He and his oldest son, John H., hauled freight from Ft. Worth to Fort Belknap in West Texas (Young County). At that time Fort Belknap was an active army post. In Tarrant County he preempted land. He later moved to Brown County where he had bought ranch land near Brownwood. '(His daughter Callie m. Lafayette McCleskey in Brown County in 1876). (Lafayette was a son of Thaddeus, son of David H., son of James the Revolutionary soldier.
After a few years in Brown County, John L. bought a farm in Coryell County, near King, Texas. Here his wife, Emily, d. 18 Aug. 1887, and was buried in the King Cemetery, Coryell Co., Texas.
He later married Jane West, then Sarah Frances Pruitt. His occupation was Carpenter, freighter, farmer.
