Ora Hawkins, former George Award winner

MULBERRY - Ora O. Hawkins, 86, former George Award winner and retired Alcoa employee, died at 2:40 p.m. Thursday in Mulberry Lutheran Home. Mr. Hawkins had been a carpenter and painter foreman at Alcoa in Lafayette for 30 years, retiring in 1966. He received the George Award from the Lafayette Journal and Courier in 1969 for his leadership in building a medical center in Mulberry and encouraging two physicians to begin practicing in that community.

He served as president of the 25-year Club at Alcoa one year. He also received a 50-year active scouting award from the Boy Scouts, where he earned the Firecrafter Award and Silver Beaver Award. He participated in the National Boy Scout Jamborees in California and Valley Forge, Pa. A member of Mulberry United Methodist Church, he did extensive work in remodeling the worship center at the church and was a board member there several years. He was president of the Community Club in Mulberry, president and board member of March of Dimes and president of the 60-Plus Club. He also spearheaded the organization of the Senior Citizens Club in Mulberry, and was active in the Council on Aging activities in Clinton, Tippecanoe, and other counties.

Born in West Point, June 25, 1901, he moved to Mulberry in 1937 and had lived at Mulberry Lutheran Home since Dec. 26, 1985. His marriage was Oct. 18, 1924, to Bertha Unger, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Ray N. Hawkins of Lafayette and Gene R. Hawkins of New Castle.
