Willa Mae Baker, 92, Independence, MO, went to meet her Lord on September 18, 2001, at Independence Regional Health Center. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, September 22, at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial in Mt. Washington Cemetery. Visitation will precede the service 10-11 a.m. Saturday, at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to Mt. Washington Baptist Church or a charity of choice. Mae was born in Lesterville, MO, July 7, 1909, to Harmon and Mary Etta Alcorn. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Leo W. Baker, her son, Wendell H. Baker, two grandsons, her parents, three sisters and one brother. Mae and Leo were married in 1928 and lived in Topeka, KS until they moved to the Kansas City area in 1941. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her life revolved around her church of 58 years, Mt. Washington Baptist Church of Independence, her family, her friends and until recent years, her love of working in her rose garden. She was employed for several years by the Kansas City School District at Stark Elementary School, where she was a cafeteria worker. She is survived and will be greatly missed by her daughter-in-law, Marianna Baker, Grain Valley, MO; a son, Gary L. Baker and wife, Beth, Amarillo, TX; daughter, Mary A. Price and husband, Bill of the home; six grandchildren and their spouses; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many other loving relatives and friends.
