Robert Newgent
Robert R. Newgent Sr., 93, of Fairview Heights, Ill., formerly of Belleville, Ill., born Aug. 7, 1911, in East St. Louis, Ill., died Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004, at Memorial Hospital, Belleville, Ill.
Mr. Newgent retired as an operator with Monsanto after 36 years of service. He was a World War II Navy veteran. He was a 50-year member of Gothic Lodge 852 A.F. & A.M.; Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Southern Illinois; Ainad Temple; Belleville Shrine Club; Dania Shrine Club; Legion of Honor; Uniformed Units of Ainad Temple; Sword of Bunker Hill; past member of Stookey Township Board for eight years; St. Clair County Board member for four years; Democratic precinct committeeman for Stookey Township; a member of Kaskaskia Industrial Development Council; past president of West End Khoury League; and a member of American Legion Post 58 and Golden Agers.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Emma, nee Radford, Newgent; his first wife, Marjorie, nee Allison, Newgent; two brothers, Herbert and David Newgent; and a sister, Juanita Hudson.
He is survived by his wife, Hilda A., nee Geppert-Bradshaw, Newgent, whom he married Sept. 24, 1966; a son, Robert (Deborah) Newgent II of Belleville, Ill.; two stepchildren, Sheila (Craig) Gray of Atlanta, Ga., and Neil (Bonnie) Bradley of Willisville, Ill.; a granddaughter, Mallori Lynne Newgent of Belleville, Ill.; a brother, Darwin Newgent of Belleville, Ill.; and two sisters, Gale Newgent of Cahokia, Ill., and Helen Louise Wells of Belleville, Ill.
Memorials may be made to the Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children or to Our Lady Queen of Peace Church.
Visitation: Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, at Kassly Mortuary, Fairview Heights, Ill. A prayer service will be held at 5 p.m., a Legion of Honor walk-thru will be held at 7 p.m., and a masonic service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.
Funeral: Funeral procession will leave at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, from Kassly Mortuary, Fairview Heights, Ill., for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, with the Rev. Jack McEvilly officiating. Interment will be in Valhalla Gardens of Memory, Belleville, Ill.
