He was wounded in Normandy in July 1944. He returned to combat in August and was wounded again and more seriously in Belgium in December 1944. He was awarded a Bronze Star and Purple Heart, as well as Combat Infantry Badge and various campaign ribbons and battle stars. After long hospital stays in England and then Staten Island, he was retired with the rank of captain in 1947.
