Fred Thurston Spires, Sr., 83, of Moline, IL, died Wednesday, July 02, 2014, at Heritage Woods of Moline, Moline, IL.
A graveside service will be held at 11:30 p.m. Friday, July 11, 2014, at National Cemetery at Rock Island Arsenal where military honors will be provided. Those wishing to attend the service should meet at 11:00 a.m. at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601 38th Avenue, Moline. Per his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded and there will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to the American Cancer Society.
Fred was born on February 27, 1931, in Jacksonville, IL, the son of Thomas James and Ruth Hutchinson Spires. He married Georgie Lois Stratton on October 13, 1954, in Virginia, IL, and she preceded him in death in 1978. He later married Delores Faye Assy on October 20, 1979, in Davenport, IA, and she preceded him in death in 2010.
Fred proudly served the United States Marine Corps. He worked as a shift head lock and dam operator for the Corp of Engineers Lock # 14 for 26 years, retiring in 1989. Fred enjoyed woodworking and camping. He loved visiting with people and he never met a stranger.
