OBITUARY - Crespo & Jirrels Funeral Home

Major John Hooper, USMC (Retired), age 93, of Baytown, died peacefully at home surrounded by family after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease on June 29, 2014. He was born on June 28, 1921, in Santa Cruz, CA to Harry and Esther Hooper. On August 6, 1948, he married Connie Smith in Beaumont, TX.

John enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942, completing Officers' Candidate School in 1944. As a Lieutenant, he landed at Sasebo, Japan as part of the occupying force after Nagasaki bombing ended World War II. During the Korean Conflict, he was stationed at Mare Island, Hawaii with the first Air and Naval Gunfire Liaison Company, A.N.G.L.I.C.O.

John received a Bachelor of Science in Physics/Chemistry from St. Mary's College of California and University of California at Berkeley. He worked with Sun Oil Company as a petroleum engineer in Beaumont and retired in 1985. John was a member of American Contract Bridge, The American Legion, Evening Optimist of Beaumont, Lakewood Neighborhood Watch, The Military Officers' Association of America, National Rifleman' Association, Society of Petroleum Engineers, St John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Baytown, and St. Mary's College of California Alumni.

He is survived by his wife, Connie Hooper, of Baytown; daughters, Kathleen Julicher and husband, Mark ,of Bulverde, TX, Susan Norton and husband, Colby, of Plano, and Patti Allen of Danville, CA; sons, John Hooper Jr. and wife, Barbara, of Helotes, and Richard Hooper and wife, Marianne, of Ruston, LA; 15 grandchildren, Joseph Julicher, Esther Wingard, Daniel Julicher, Sarah Julicher, Anna Mears, Clara Carlisle, Kelley La Croix, Patrick Norton, Kevin Hooper, Maura Hooper, Chris Allen, Justin Allen, Ben Allen, April Hooper, and Brynna Hooper, and 28 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Esther Hooper, and his brother, Harry B Hooper Jr and sister, Marie Strain.

The family will receive friends at Crespo and Jirrels Funeral, 6123 Garth Road, Baytown, TX, 77521 on Wednesday, July 2, 2014 from 6-8 PM. Funeral mass will be held at St. John, the Evangelist, 800 W. Baker Rd, Baytown TX on Thursday, July 3, 2014 at 11 AM. Interment will follow at 3 PM, with full military honors at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park, 4955 Pine Street, Beaumont TX, 77703.
