SUMTER - Dorothy Leona Barfield Beatson , age 88, and beloved wife of the late Earle Leroy Beatson , Sr., died August 24, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born on January 8, 1921, in Sumter, SC, she was the daughter of the late Manley Wilson Barfield and Mabel Scurry Barfield. She was a life long resident of Sumter and served as former president of the American Legion Auxiliary #15. Mrs. Beatson was a faithful member of Grace Baptist Church where she served as the former WMU president and a Sunday School teacher. She was an accomplished musician, and loved to play the piano and organ. She was affectionately known as "Gar" by her grandchildren and great-grandchild, whom she loved dearly.
Survivors are two sons of New Carlisle, Ind., and of Columbia, S.C.; a daughter of Sumter, S.C.; an aunt of Sumter, S.C.; four grandchildren of Sumter, S.C., of Indiana; and a great-grandchild of Sumter, S.C.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by two sisters, Willie Mae Atkinson and Esther Jennings and a brother, William Manley Barfield
A funeral service will be held on Friday, August 28, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Baptist Church with Dr. James R. Chandler officiating. Burial will follow in Sumter Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, August 27, 2009, at Bullock Funeral Home.
