George M. Kirby, 79, of Bassett, died Saturday, April 8, 2006, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
He was born February 8, 1927, in South Carolina to David Traxler Kirby and Subile Langford Kirby. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
He served in the Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict and was a member of Evangelist Tabernacle Church.
Surviving are his wife, Jean Washburn Kirby of the home; two sons, Dwight Kirby of Birmingham, Ala. and Steve Kirby of Knoxville, Tenn.; a daughter, Cynthia Foley of Bassett; a sister, Frances "Angie" Williamson of South Carolina; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bassett Funeral Services chapel with sons, Dwight Kirby and Steve Kirby, officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Hermon Church of the Brethren church cemetery with full military honors conducted by the Martinsville and Henry County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends for one hour before the service at the funeral home.
