He attended Central High in Tahlequah; in 1942, he joined the US Army and served in the 341st Engineer Regiment, Co. E. He served in the Normandy Invasion, Rhineland Ardennes, Northern France, Central Europe and Germany. He earned the European, African, Middle Eastern (Eame) Theater Ribbon, a Silver Service Star, the Good Conduct Medal and was awarded the Purple Heart. He served until Nov 1945; when he returned home, he attended Draughn Business College in Muskogee.
On 7 Dec 1946 he wed Carrol Jane Harp; they made their first home in Catoosa, then Tahlequah. Dan had worked at Northeast OK Gas before working at W. W. Hasting Hopistal's Maintenance Department in Tahlequah where he retired after 17 years of service. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Preceding Dan in death are his mother; a daughter Carrol Sue Huffaker; a sister Effie Skeeter.
He is survived by his wife Carroll Jean of 59 yrs.; a son Rick Gourd of Tahlequah; daughter Linda Evans and husband Kelly of Holdenville; grandchildren: Kelly Taulbee, Kimmy King, Tina Johnson, Joshua Gourd, LeAnn Davis, Ross and Elizabeth Evans; great-grandchildren: Daniel King, Cara King, Colton Johnson and Jasey Johnson.
