The Bellingham Herald (WA) 22 May 1985, Wed
Bessie Dorr 97, 5640 1st St, Ferndale, familiarly known as "Grandma Dorr," died Tuesday in St. Luke's Hospital.
She was born Aug 2, 1887, in Creighton, MO, and came to the State of Washington in 1907 with her parents, Edward and Nancy Constant. After living a short time in Seattle and Sequim, the family moved to Whatcom County.
Mrs. Dorr recounted in a story written for The Herald in 1980: "I married William E. Dorr in 1909 and took up housekeeping on Wiser Lake Road across from the 'old folks.' During my early years as a wife and mother, I recall ordering dry goods from Bellingham that came up the Nooksack River by steamboat. My father-in-law blazed a trail from the homestead to the river for the ox-team cart to travel when meeting that boat ... "
"My life was simple: staying home most of the time, planning food and clothing for my family," she continued.
"My church was the center of my religious life, as well as the social outlet. I played piano and taught Sunday school, something I continued to do for the next 50 years."
The family moved to Lynden before moving to Ferndale in 1930. Mrs. Dorr's husband William E. Dorr (known as "Grandpa Dorr"), died in 1969. He had operated the stage (bus) line between Ferndale and Bellingham for many years.
Mrs. Dorr was a member of United Church of Ferndale, a charter member of the Leisure Time Club at Bellingham Senior Center, and a member of the Women's Christian Temperance Union.
Survivors include a daughter, Priscilla Tanguy of Ferndale; four sons, Philip of Lynden, William of Bellingham, Robert of Bellingham and George of Marysville; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Barbara Constant of Bellingham; a brother-in-law, Albert Glass of Lynden; and numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives.
Memorial services will be at 2 pm Friday at United Church of Ferndale, with the Rev. Stephen Davis officiating. A private family service will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to United Church of Ferndale, or to a favorite charity.
