Mrs. Nellie Jane McGuire, 83, of Mound City died Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 13, in the Tiffany Heights Nursing Home, where she had been a patient since April, after suffering a stroke.
The daughter of Frank and Nettie Fair Acton, she was born June 21, 1894, at Willow Springs, Mo., and when a small child moved with her parents to Forest City. Nellie graduated from Forest City High School (10th grade) in 1911.
On Nov. 9, 1912 she was married to William George McGuire, in St. Joseph, where they lived a year before moving to South Missouri, near Osceola. In 1918 they returned to Holt County and became associated with the orchard business, which they continued until Mr. McGuire's death, March 13, 1950. Mrs. McGuire managed the orchard until 1958 when she moved from the farm to her present home in Mound City.
Mrs. McGuire was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church, Mound City, and was active in the U.M.W. of the church as long as her health permitted.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Audrey, a grandson, Phillip Duane Miles, one sister, Cora Buntz and three brothers, Paul, Roy and Henry Acton.
Survivors are one son, Clyde McGuire, Oregon; three daughters, Mrs. Marvin (Ariel) Barnett, St. Joseph; Mrs. Junior (Inez) Miles and Mrs. Wilson (Joetta) Lawrence, Mound City; one sister, Mrs. Everett (Irene) Planalp, Oregon, one brother, Doyal Acton, Forest City; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Services were set for Thursday, Sept. 15, at 2 p.m. in the Pettijohn & Crawford Funeral Home with the Rev. William Hammond officiating, and burial in Mount Hope Cemetery here.
Pallbearers: Dennis Lawrence, Ronnie Lawrence, Gary Miles, Kevin Miles, and Bob McGuire, grandsons, and Victor Buntz, a nephew.
