Mary was the daughter of John Ochs and Austrian immigrant (im. ca. 1853) Katharina (used Catharine) Fisher, who wed on 30 Jan 1871. On both the 1900 and the 1910 Census, Catharine reported having had nine children, eight living. The names of their eight surviving children are as follows: Frank Joseph (11 Oct 1871 – 3 Mar 1936, m. Anna Mary Reineck, the sister of Mary’s huband Peter Reineck); Mary T. (15 Oct 1873 – 6 May 1952, m. Peter Ambrose Reineck); Anna Bridget (11 Apr 1876 – 8 Jul 1931, m. George Wilbert Wilhelm); Elenora J. (25 Apr 1878 – 30 Dec 1917, m. Henry Fredrick Borer); Margaretha “Margaret” C. (Apr 1880 – 1930, became a nun, taking the name Sister Mary Siena); William Rupert (26 Mar 1882 – 22 Jun 1956, never married); Josephine Agatha (8 Nov 1884 – 6 Nov 1923, never married); and John George (21 Jan 1887 – 2 Jun 1952, m. Mary Cecelia Houck.

The 1880 Census placed the family in Sandusky Co., Ohio. John Ochs, 35, was farming for a living. Catharine, 31, was tending to the household and the needs of their five children—Frank, 8, Mary, 6, Anna, 4, Elenora (Ellen on the record), 2, and 2-month-old Margaret. Also living in the home were Mary’s paternal grandparents, Peter and Walburga Ochs, both 74, Peter noted as a tailor. The family also had a live-in hired man to help with the running of the farm in the person of Charles Baumer.

The loss of the 1890 Census creates quite a gap in a family’s history if no other records exist. The 1900 Census caught back up with the Ochs family, living in Ballville Twp., Sandusky Co., Ohio. John Ochs, 55, was busy farming, and was considered one of the pioneers of Ballville Township. Catharine, 51, was keeping house. Still at home with their parents were Frank, 28, Mary, 26, Anna, 24, Margaret, 26, William, 18, Josephine, 15, and John, 13.

Two years after that enumeration, Mary married the man she would spend the next forty-five years with, wedding Peter Ambrose Reineck in 1902. Though both Mary and Peter were from large families, they did not have any children of their own.

The 1910 Census placed Mary and Peter in Riley Twp., Sandusky Co., Ohio. Peter Reineck, 38, was noted as a farmer. Mary, 37, reported that she had not had any children. Living with the couple was Peter’s brother, Joseph Reineck, 27 and helping Peter run the farm.

On his 12 Sep 1917 WWI registration, Peter Ambrose Reineck, 45, reported his address as RFD (Rural Farm Delivery) #10 in Fremont, Ohio, his occupation that of farmer. Wife Mary was noted as his nearest relative. The clerk decided that he was of medium height and build, and noted his eyes as dark brown and his hair as black.

At the end of that same year, Mary’s sister Elenora Ochs Borer died five days after Christmas on 30 Dec 1917. She was only 39 years old.

When the 1920 Census came around, Mary and Peter were living on Meyer Rd. in Riley Twp., Sandusky Co., Ohio. Peter Reineck, 47, was busy farming. Mary, 46, was keeping house. Still with them was Peter’s brother Joseph, 37, still single, and noted as a farm hand.

The decade following that census was one of sad losses for Mary. On 13 Jan 1921, her father John Ochs died at age 75. On 6 Nov 1923, Mary’s sister Josephine was claimed by influenza. And in 1925, Mary’s mother Catharine died, aged about 77.

When the 1930 Census takers hit the streets with their oversized notebooks, the Reineck family was living on Stokes Rd. in Riley Twp., Sandusky Co., Ohio. Peter Reineck, 58, was still actively farming. Mary, 57, was keeping house. Peter’s brother Joseph, 37, was still living with them and helping Peter with the farm chores. Also there that decade was Mary’s younger brother William Ochs, 48, noted as single, and no occupation noted for him.

There were more sad losses for Mary in the thirties. She lost her sister Margaret, who had become a nun and was known as Sister Mary Siena in 1930. A year later, Mary’s sister Anna Ochs Wilhelm died on 8 Jul 1931, and Mary’s brother Frank died five years after that on 3 Mar 1936. Of the nine children born to John and Catharine Ochs, only Mary and her brothers William and John remained.

When the 1940 Census came around, Mary and Peter were still living in Riley Twp. in Sandusky County. Peter Reineck (incorrectly transcribed as Benich), 67, was still farming. Mary, 66, was still keeping house, and Peter’s brother Joseph, 58, was still living with them and helping with the farm.

The year after that enumeration, Mary and Peter packed up their worldly possessions and moved to Fremont, Ohio. (The News-Messenger, Fremont, OH – Wed 26 Feb 1941 p. 6) “FAREWELL PARTY. Mr. and Mrs. Peter Reineck of Riley township, who are moving to Fremont, were given a farewell party Sunday evening by the neighbors, the evening spent in cards. They were remembered with a gift. Lunch was served.” (a list of guests followed)

Sadly, after forty-five years at each other’s side, death parted the couple, claiming Mary’s husband Peter Reineck on 2 Mar 1947, aged 74.

Mary will appear on one final census record when the 1950 Census is released in 2022. She died two years later on 6 May 1952 at age 78, and was laid to rest at husband Peter’s side. A month later, Mary’s brother John died on 2 Jun 1952. Her brother William, the last surviving sibling, lived to age 74, not departing this earth until 22 Jun 1956.
