Hold Last Rites in Amery Church for Mrs. E. Mekkelson

Friends and relatives paid their last respects at funeral services for Mrs. Elmer Mekkelson held in the Congregational church in Amery, Tuesday, May 24. Rev. J. G. Decker officiated.

Pallbearers were Charles Remund, Paul Remund, Erwin Danielson, D. O. Nelson, Oscar Erickson and Sam Dosch.

Those from out of town who attended included Ella Brockman and five guests from United Pioneer Home at Luck; Esther Reinke, Mildred Blair, Mrs. J. T. Estabrook, Mrs. A. Sporre, and Mr. and Mrs. Karl Reinke and Gretchen of Faribault, Minn.

Janet Wason Glover was born January 29, 1869, to Jessie Reid and Robert Glover in Almont, Michigan where nine of their 12 children grew to maturity. With no organized church in the community, she saw that no Sunday went by without singing and Bible study in her home for her family and neighbors.

Janet went to Detroit, Mich., to learn the dressmaking trade in her early twenties. Here she was baptized and became a member of the Woodard Avenue Baptist church. She later transferred her membership to the Oxford Baptist church.

In 1895, Janet and her sister opened a dressmaking shop in Oxford, Mich. Several years later she went to live with her sister, Tena, in Dunbar, Wis. Here she met and married Elmer Mekkelson, Oct. 8, 1902. Elmer was a telegrapher for the Soo Line Railway. He had come from Norway as a boy.

Two children were born to them, Ralph Elmer, who died in infancy, and Dorcas Marian who survives her.

In May 1917, the family moved to Amery. Her husband passed away September 30, 1950. She moved to the United Pioneer Home at Luck, in April of 1954. She was hospitalized May 2, 1955 and passed away in the St. Lucas Hospital in Faribault, Minn., on May 21.

Janet Mekkeson was a member of the Congregational church of Amery at the time of her death. She taught the primary classes in Sunday School for 25 years at Dunbar and Amery. She was also a charter member of the Dunbar Federated Women’s Club. She was a member of the Golden Link Rebecca lodge and the WCTU.

Besides her daughter, Dorcas, she is survived by her son-in-law, Karle Reinke; two grandchildren, Janet Mary Jenkins (Mrs. James DeWayne) of Stuttgart, Germany and Gretchen Lou of Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio; two nieces, Mrs. Weber Ware of Ortonville, Michigan and Mrs. Glenn Goodrich of Oxford, Mich. Her father, mother and 11 sisters and brothers all preceded her in death.
