Robert was a son of Dexter and Myrtle (Banks) Gray and was born on a century old family farm on Emerald Grove Road which is now operated by his son. He attended the Old Stone elementary school in North Johnstown and was graduated from Milton High School in 1916. Robert was a employee of the Wisconsin State Conservation Deptartment. He joined the department in 1923 and served as a game warden in the Milton area for about ten years. He was then made superintendent of the commercial fishing department until 1943 when he was named assistant director of the State Conservation Dept. In 1944 he resigned and founded the Robert A. Gray Co., Inc. which he operated until two years ago. As a youth he raised and showed Shorthorn cattle. During his early years he was a sports enthusiast and pitched for a local baseball team in Milton and was asked to play semi-pro baseball. He was a 50-year Mason of Milton Masonic Lodge No. 161, F. & A. M., Friendship Chapter No. 46, O. E. S., Madison Consistory and Tripoli Shrine, Milwaukee.
