Ezra Marvin Royce
The Avon Herald, of Thursday, December 5, contained the following account of Ezra Marvin Royce, of that village, formerly of Thurston, whose death occurred November 30.

TAPS FOR ANOTHER
OLD SOLDIER

Mr. Ezra Marvin Royce, an old and highly respected resident of this village, one of the few of that great army of veterans that fought in the war of the rebellion, still remaining in Avon, answered the call of the Great Commander Saturday morning after a long illness, aged 85 years.
He is survived by one son, Eugene Royce of Churchville, one daughter, Mrs. William Pierson of Marceline, Mo., and one brother, John Royce, with whom he lived.
He was born in Starkey, Yates County, September 18,1833, and was the son of John and Ruany Royce. at the outbreak of the war, he imbibed the spirit that saved a nation, and on May 6, 1861, he enlisted in the federal forces, serving for a period of two year until May 22,1863, when he was honorably discharged. The splendid record he made as a soldier was none better then his record in civil life. Too much praise could not be bestowed upon Martin Royce. He had those qualities that marked him as a good man. He had a lot of friends in Avon who loved to greet him, and they sorrow at his death, altho he had long since passed the alloted life of man. He became a member of H.C. Cutler Post 235 on April 5, 1884, and was a member at the time it surrendered its charter, maintaining his interest up until the end.
The funeral was held on Monday, the Rev. Charles W. Taylor, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church, officiating. Interment was in the Avon cemetery.
Deceased was a wagon maker by trade and for a number of years he did the wood working at W.E. Cole's plant.
For several years he has passed his winters in Missouri, with his daughter, Mrs. Pierson, but this year he felt too feeble to make the trip.
