Markham was a pioneer Sunday-school worker and insurance man. A "peculiar" incident led him to settle in St. Louis from his home state of Virginia. He intended to head west to mine for gold. During his trip down the Ohio River, his boat became stuck on a sand bar in St. Louis for two weeks. He kept busy by making business connections and therefore remained in the city. Markham was head of the insurance firm W. H. Markham and Sons and was devoted to religious work in his church's Sunday school. He founded Menard Street Mission and served as superintendent of the old Centenary Sunday School. He died of a stomach ailment leaving behind a wife and four children.
