Clarence and his brother Ernie immigrated to Canada from New York to Emo where he married Nancy, a native American from Seine River Ontario. In 1956 the family moved to Sapawee and at the age of 15 Ivan moved to Downers Grove Illinois to live with his older sister Ida Colgan and her husband George. He eventually enlisted in the US Army in Chicago and after recruit training arrived in Vietnam on March 2, 1968 where he was assigned to and served with Company B, 2d Battalion, 1st Infantry, 196th Infantry Brigade, Americal Division, USARV.
On April 9, during a combat patrol PFC Broeffle who was on point set off a booby trap, the resulting explosion caused his death by multiple fragmentation wounds from the hostile explosive device.
