Madelon Petroff Adler 83 Jan. 08, 1931 June 17, 2014

Madelon Frances Adler Petroff passed away peacefully June 17, 2014, in the presence of loved ones. Madelon was born Jan. 8, 1931, in Klamath Falls, to Dr. George Adler and Madelon Boie Adler. From an early age, Madelon was a gifted pianist. At age 13, she enrolled at the University of Oregon as a special student in the School of Music and Dance, where she studied under George Hopkins. Madelon lived in a dormitory on the UO campus while attending University High School, from which she graduated in 1947. She loved her years at the UO and, with a gleam in her eye, often expressed appreciation for the older girls who took her in and taught her to "smoke and play pinochle." She had a wonderful, if somewhat ribald, sense of humor. At age 17, Madelon performed as a featured soloist with the Portland Junior Symphony. Following her graduation from the UO in 1952, Madelon continued her studies at The Juilliard School in New York, where she studied under Irwin Freundlich. Eventually, Madelon completed her master's degree at Lewis & Clark College in Portland. She performed and taught privately in Portland for over 30 years. In addition to music and the arts, Madelon loved reading, speaking French, her dogs, Black Butte Ranch and Duck football. She was a great conversation- alist and had a seemingly endless supply of limericks that she shared freely. Most important to her, she was true to her friends, and a wonderful, loving mother and grandmother. Madelon is survived by her sons, Victor, Mark and Paul; daughter, Karen Ecklund; and 12 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, Dr. A. Eugene Petroff, who passed away in 1987; parents, Dr. and Mrs. George Adler; brother, George Adler, Jr.; sister, Sheila Adler Browning; and beloved Bichon Frisé, Chou Chou. There will be a private family Mass and memorial service. The family suggests memorial contributions may be sent to the School of Music and Dance, the Madelon Petroff Piano Scholarship at the University of Oregon (make checks payable to the "UO Foundation" and mail to University of Oregon Foundation, 1720 E. 13th Ave., Suite 410, Eugene, OR 97403-1905) or to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
