John D Winters, Jr., 85, died Nov. 18, 2008, in Casper, Wyoming after a courageous battle with a rare and aggressive cancer.

John was born Sept. 7, 1923, in McNeil, AR, the son of John D Sr. and Leona Crockett Winters. He graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in public accounting. In 1942, John enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and flew 35 combat missions as a gunner on a B-24 over Germany during WWII.

In 1946, John married Helen Claire Braswell. Together they raised two daughters both born in Texas.

In 1950, John was recalled to active duty with the Air Force as a result of the Korean War. During this year he received a direct commission as 2nd Lt. He finished the remaining 16 years of his 20 year military service as a resident auditor responsible for auditing all functions at Air Force installations in the United States, as well as overseas in Japan, Morocco, and Germany.

John retired from the Air Force in 1968, with the rank of Major and joined the audit staff of the state of Washington as a Supervisory Examiner auditing state agencies, and retired from there in 1985.

In 1990, his wife, Helen passed away.

John moved to Jackson Hole, WY in 1991.

In 1992, John met and married Vicki Niethammer of Casper. Together they raised her two daughters.

John was a disaster assistance employee with FEMA from 1990 to 2007.

These assignments lasted from 30-120 days and took him to sixteen states, Guam, and St. Thomas.

John's favorite hobbies were golf and woodworking.

He is survived by his wife, Vicki Winters of Casper; four daughters, Shelley (Tom) Landon of Casper, Susan Winters of Sedona, AZ, Carrie TeSelle (Mike) Lebsock, and Chrissy (Pete) Owen, all of Casper; seven grandchildren, Ryan (Chris) Prouty of Houston, TX, Kyle Landon of Jackson, WY, Dustin Audet of Aspen, CO, Katie, Bailey, and Aubrey Owen, and Victor Lebsock, all of Casper; two great-grandchildren, Adrien and Cole Prouty of Houston, TX.

He was preceded in death by his father, mother, sister, and his first wife.

John will be remembered for his compassion, strength, courage, and thirst for knowledge. He had an overwhelming love of animals and children and exhibited unconditional love and support for his family.

Burial services will be held in San Antonio, TX.
