Mr. Baur died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at St. Luke's Hospital, Kansas City, Mo.
He was born in 1913 in St. Louis. He attended St. Louis public schools and Washington University of St. Louis.
He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Chicago in 1935, a master's degree in 1938 and a doctorate in 1942.
Mr. Baur served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943 to 1946, and had taught at Dillard University, New Orleans, before the war.
He became an assistant professor of sociology at Kansas University in 1947 and was promoted to associate professor in 1949 and professor in 1959. During his 33 years at KU, he twice served as chair of the department of sociology. He retired in December 1982.
Mr. Baur served on a variety of KU committees, spent a term as president of AAUP and conducted a program of research that resulted in a continuing series of scholarly publications.
He received two Fulbright lectureships, to the University of Amsterdam and to the University of Vienna. He also spent sabbatical leaves at Social Change Study Center, Seattle, and as a resident scholar with the Board of Engineers, Washington, D.C.
Mr. Baur was a member of Lawrence League for the Practice of Democracy, a board member of the Douglas County and state units of the American Civil Liberties Union and the Kansas affiliate of Common Cause.
He had also served on the board of First Step House, of which he was president from 1988 to 1989; and the board of Douglas County Senior Services, where he was chairman in 1994; and was a longtime member of Lawrence Unitarian Fellowship, on whose board he had served as treasurer.
From 1997 to 2001, he was the Douglas County delegate to the Kansas Silver-Haired Legislature.
He married Lillian E. Jacobey in 1939 in Lincoln, Neb. She died in 1991. He married Miriam W. Blum in 1996. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include a daughter, Joan Baur, Montpeyroux, France; and a son, John, Lawrence.
