Peter, the son of Napoleon Roy and Mary Hayward, of Fairhaven MA enlisted in the US Marine Corps on May 29 1967 in Boston MA. He arrived in Vietnam on Nov 14 1967 where he was assigned for duty and served with Company E, 2d Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the month of December the Battalion was operating in northern Quang Tri Province and on December 5, in the vicinity of Thon Thuong Phuoc southwest of Quang Tri city the Marines received incoming rifle fire. Movement was observed in front of their position and they opened fire only to discover it was a friendly patrol. They had been mistaken for the enemy, two Marines were wounded and PFC Roy was killed by small arms fire.
