Aaron Moses "Shush" Kazan, former mayor of Deerfield Township died peacefully at his home on Saturday morning June 14, 2014. "Shush" was a lifelong resident of Carmel and was 83.
He was born to Albert and Fannie (nee Aaron) Kazan on November 22, 1930 in Philadelphia, PA and was raised in Carmel. A graduate of Bridgeton High School in 1948, he enlisted in the United States Navy in January of 1951 and proudly served his country during the Korean War. He completed Armed Forces Information School at Fort Slocum and served bravely on the USS Nantahala and the USS Polaris, which was the longest serving ship during that conflict. As Chief Petty Officer 2nd Class, he was awarded the Korean Service Medal with 5 battle stars along with other service awards. He also received the Distinguished Service Medal from the State of NJ for his service.
After returning home, he enrolled in Rutgers University under the provisions of the GI Bill. Mr. Kazan became a social worker for the Cumberland Welfare Board in 1960. He worked compassionately on behalf of the many families he assisted during his 35 years of service helping them in their time of need. As an entrepreneur he and his wife Barbara operated Kazan Liquor Store in Carmel from 1963 though 1995. He built the Carmel Shopping Center in 1964 which included the liquor store, a butcher shop and grocery store. He greeted his customers as friends from behind the counter with a smile, a laugh and a friendly story.
"Shush" was first elected to the Deerfield Township Committee in 1991 and served two terms in office from 1991 to 1997. He served two one year terms as the township's mayor and was a member of the New Jersey Council of Mayors. During his time in office, not only did he preside over several weddings, he worked tirelessly on behalf of the residents of Rosenhayn and Carmel. He became a licensed real estate broker and formed Kazan Realty Associates. Mr. Kazan specialized in commercial real estate.
During his retirement, he worked for Wheaton Industries and Lawson Mardon-Algroup as he transported their executives from Philadelphia and New York to their headquarters in Millville. A member of the Korean War Veterans of 38th Parallel of Cumberland County, he served as their secretary. He coached many youth baseball teams including an undefeated team from North Cumberland. He was a lifelong photographer always toting his signature Nikon cameras to every event and family gathering. "Shush" enjoyed fishing, cars and was an avid reader of history, politics and especially, the New York Times, which he read everyday often trying his hand at the crossword puzzle. Most of all, he was a great friend and family man; immensely proud of his children and their families, especially his grandchildren.

(nee Schwartz) Kazan, daughter, Dana Catalana (Carmine) of Vineland, son, Howard "Herk" Kazan (Michelle) of Millville, grandchildren, Rachel, Nicholas and Rebekah Catalana, Abby Abbot ( Tom ) of Lawton, OK, Alissa and Alexandra Kazan and great granddaughter, Annamarie Abbot, his sister, Inez Karp of Fairfield Township and nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service at the FREITAG FUNERAL HOME, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton on Thursday afternoon June 19th at 2:30 with Rabbi Bradley Bleefield officiating. The burial will military honors will follow at Chesed Shel Emeth Cemetery in Carmel. Visitations with the family will be held at the funeral home Wednesday evening from 6 until 8 and also on Thursday afternoon from 1:30 until 2:30. Shiva will be observed at the home of Dana and Carmine Catalana immediately following the interment.
