Virginia Beach - Genevieve J. Barnes (Gini), 83, formerly a resident of Virginia Beach, passed away on April 21, 2014 in West Columbia, SC. Gini was born on April 24, 1930 in Burlington, IA to the late Joseph and Beulah Wirt. She was predeceased by husband of eight months Stephen Palmer and husband of fifteen years Cdr. Harry G. Barnes, Jr.

She was a graduate of Burlington High School and Iowa State Teachers College (University of Northern Iowa) where she earned her bachelor's degree in home economics. She began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse but after marriage changed her vocation to being an officer's wife and wonderful mother. At 48 she returned to classes at Norfolk State and was recertified to teach. Gini taught in Virginia Beach Schools at the Career Development Center until her retirement.

Gini was a member of St. Aidan's Episcopal Church for 44 years where she served as a member of the Vestry and was a Sunday school teacher. She was an active member of Alpha Delta Kappa for women educators. She loved to sew, bake and garden. She was a much beloved mother, grandmother, sister, neighbor and friend.

She is survived by her children Robert Barnes of Lexington, SC, Elaine Barnes of Loveland, OH and Joseph Barnes of Mount Pleasant, SC; grandchildren, Robert Barnes Jr, Megan Glaves, Catherine Pierce, Kirsten Barnes, Harry Barnes III and Maxwell Barnes; daughters-in-law Debra Barnes and B.J. Barnes; brothers Leon Wirt of Joliet, IL and Martin Wirt of Sun Lakes, AZ; sisters-in-law Harriet Richards and Peggy Wirt, and brother-in-law Philip Palmer.

A memorial service will be held at St. Aidan's Episcopal Church and graveside interment service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery. Dates for these services are to be determined.
