John Ellison Maxfield was born in Youlton, England. He was about 17 when he came to Prince Edward Island with his family. There he married Sarah Elizabeth Baker 26 Mar 1827 in Bedeque, Canada. They emigrated to Iowa in 1850, then to Utah in 1851. Had 11 children. Settled in South Cottonwood, Utah. Worked on SL Temple.
