Altoona Mirror, Monday, 7 August 1922:

"Mrs. Matilda Ann Maurer, widow of James Maurer, died on Sunday morning at 1 o'clock at her home in Juniata Gap, following a lingering illness from cancer. Mrs. Maurer was born June 11, 1850. Her husband died on May 5, 1910. Surviving are nine children: Mrs. J.L. Bloom and Mrs. Andrew Emes of Juniata Gap, Mrs. E.H. Mercer of Eldorado, Mrs. R.K. Spidle of Cleveland, O., Mrs. C.D. Mechtley and Carl of Juniata, A.L. of Centre county, W.M. of Wehnwood, J.D. of Henrietta, and a sister and brother, Mrs. Nancy Yingling of Hollidaysburg, and John Miller of Altoona, and thirty-eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mrs. Maurer was for many years a member of the Memorial Baptist church and the funeral service will be in charge of her pastor, Rev. J.G. Irvine. The cortege will leave her late home at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon and proceed to the Juniata Gap Union church, where service will be held at 2:30. Interment in the Maurer-Gwin cemetery."
