Catherine was the first born of the five children of Kate Markham Russell and Thomas Wilbur Compton. Her first few years were spent in Yazoo City but then her parents returned to their hometown of Vicksburg where Cath spent the remainder of her youth. She was schooled at home by her grandmother Compton and then attended high school at All Saints Episcopal School in Vicksburg. She went on to the same college as her mother, Ward-Belmont in Nashville, Tennessee where she graduated in 1919.
