John Eugene Stammer was born
November 19, 1924 at Wisner, Nebraska
the son of John and Bessie (Sedlacek)
Stammer. He graduated from Wisner
High School in 1941 and played on the
only undefeated 7-man football team in
Wisher High School history. After graduation
he farmed for seven years with his
family. He then enrolled at Wayne State
College in Wayne, Nebraska. After two
years he was drafted into the U. S. Army
where he served in Japan during the Korean
Conflict.
He was married to Barbara G. Haight
on December 26, 1953 in Cherokee,
Iowa.
He then attended the University of
Nebraska graduating in 1954 with a
degree in Agronomy. He began working
for DeKalb Agricultural Association in
Storm Lake in 1954 and for two years was
a Plant Inspector. He went to Humboldt as
the Plant Superintendent for seven years,
returning to Storm Lake in 1963 where he
was the Plant Manager until his retirement
in 1986.
He was a member of the United
Methodist Church and participated in
Methodist Volunteers in Missions. He was
a member of the Hi-Noon Kiwanis Club;
the Izaak Walton League; the Northwest
Iowa Archeology Society and the Storm
Lake American Legion. John helped organize
and was a charter member of the
Alpha Gamma Sigma Fraternity at the
University of Nebraska.
