LEORA'S PARENTS: Mary E Futhey born 1891 in OH, died in 1935 at age 44. John Edgar Futhey was born Aug 7, 1890 in Mead, Belmont Co, OH, the son of John A Futhey & Sadie E Robinson. He died Jan 28, 1960 a resident of Weenis, VA, formerly of 1227 Edwards Ave., Lakewood, OH; buried in Oakdale Cemetery in Marysville, OH. His 2nd wife, Betha (nee Fowlie). John's siblings: Robert Futhey of Shadyside, OH, James Futhey of Brecksville, OH, Mrs Sarah Justice of East Cleveland, Mrs Mary Griffith of Shadyside, OH and Mrs Agnes Adam of Encinitas, CA.

Leora's frugality and family scrimping helped send six children to college. At one point four offspring were attending simultaneously -the University of California-Berkeley, San Jose State, University of Redlands and the US Naval Academy.

She learned to pinch pennies as a child in the Depression. Her father John, was a farmer and she lost her mother as a 16-year-old so her role the family grew more important - as did her ability to stretch a dollar, and a meal. Despite hard times, Mrs. Stahl and all seven of her siblings graduated from college and three went on to earn doctorates.

While working her way through school at the cafeteria of Ohio State University, she met her future husband, Hugh, a young US naval officer. They married in 1942 and moved to Michigan, then to California, arriving in Sunnyvale in the early 1960s to join Lockheed Martin.

Her son Robert Stahl of Sunnyvale recalled: "The lesson she used, over and over in her life, was to provide what was really necessary. They sacrificed, and never spent money on themselves."

Leora insisted that each child learn a musical instrument -- which ranged from a violin to a trombone, even drums. She welcomed their friends, including many international visitors, to the home.

After returning to complete her college education in the early 1970s, she earned a teaching credential and was employed as a substitute teacher at the Fremont Union High School District in Sunnyvale, teaching home economics, sewing and food preparation. Later she taught at the Cupertino Senior Center, specializing in food preparation classes for the elderly on a budget -including one called 'Gourmet Dining on $2 A Day.'

Her daughter Leora Perkowski of Stockton, CA said, "It wasn't until I grew up that I realized you could have a whole steak to yourself - and that you could eat more than two pieces of bacon. But we never went hungry. She was a good cook! She would get so mad if we brought home a Starbucks coffee - the cost was astronomical! To spend that kind of money on coffee! She believed that one pot could go through the whole day, heated up later. She had old skills and old values, too - a work ethic and fidelity, come hell or high water."

In later years, Mrs. Stahl continued to sew, garden and can fresh vegetables - for pleasure. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Her husband, Hugh, attended James Smart School in Ft Wayne, Indiana from 1921 to 1929. He graduated from South Side High School in 1934 and moved with his parents and brother to Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated in Cleveland from Adelbert College of (Case) Western Reserve University in 1938 Mana Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa.

Hugh served during WWII as a US naval officer on the U.S.S. Murphy (DD603) and the U.S.S. Hubbard (DD748), attaining the rank of Executive Officer of the Hubbard at war's end. He participated in the invasions of Casablanca in Africa and Gila in Sicily, survived the sinking of the U.S.S. Murphy outside New York harbor and kamikaze attacks on the U.S.S. Hubbard while on picket station at Okinawa.

He was a management analyst after the war, before retiring with U.S. Customs as Director, Regulatory Audit, San Francisco Region. In retirement he spent years researching his family genealogy; loved gardening, especially his roses and his family.

Leora's funeral was Sunday at Sunnyvale Presbyterian Church. Hugh's funeral was Saturday at D.O. McComb & Sons Lakeside Park Funeral Home, 1140 Lake Avenue followed by a procession past "Dad's" childhood home, ending with a full military send off at Lindenwood Cemetery.
