Earl Kropf Davis of Lohrville was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa April 28, 1926 to Earl C. and Agnes (Kropf) Davis. He passed away on May 25, 2014 at the Stewart Memorial Hospital in Lake City. He lived his life to the age of 88 years and 27 days.

Earl attended school in Farnhamville and graduated in 1944.

He was drafted into Army in 1945 but the war ended when he finished basic training. He then joined the Army Air Corp and served as a propeller mechanic on B29 bombers, nicknamed The Flying Fortress, for three years, traveling to Europe, Africa, Greenland and the Azores Islands.

On June 16, 1951, Earl married Barbara Borg in Lohrville. Earl and Barbara would have celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary this year.

Earl and Barbara moved to Chicago, where Earl attended Coyne Technical School. They returned to Lohrville in 1952 and Earl partnered with Barbara's father, Russell Borg, at Borg-Davis Implement, a welding/repair shop, where Earl fixed and sold televisions. They ran this business until Russell's death in 1965 when he changed the business to Davis TV.

He also farmed the family farm north of Farnhamville during this time. Earl was a substitute rural mail carrier out of Lohrville for nearly 30 years. He became a full-time rural mail carrier in Glidden from 1982 to 1988, and retired in 1990 after carrying mail in Linn Grove.

Earl was a Lohrville volunteer firefighter for 35 years, a Scoutmaster, a school bus driver, and was a member of the Lohrville American Legion, the Rural Letter Carriers Association and Lohrville Christian Church. As Scoutmaster, he earned the Silver Beaver Award in 1980. Earl took Jim Hirschberg and Warren Gemberling to the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico in 1976, which created a lifelong friendship.

Earl was an avid cyclist, and rode on RAGBRAI over 20 times, completing it 8 times. He took each of his grandchildren on RAGBRAI at least once. He rode over 1500 miles on his bike one year.

Earl is survived by his wife Barbara of Lohrville; son Brian (Becky) of Lake City; daughter Marsha (Doug) Jones of Cedar Falls, six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren (with another on the way) and a sister, Laura Mae Trafton of Newton.

His parents preceded him in death.

A graveside service was held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, May 28, 2014, at Evergreen Cemetery near Lohrville with Pastor Dan Wenig officiating and a eulogy given by Jim Hirshberg.
