Senator A.V. "Bill" Hardt was a member of the House of Representatives for 2 years and a member of the Senate for 28 years.

The Honorable August Valentine "Bill" Hardt passed away on August 1, 2001 at the age of ninety-four in Globe, Arizona.

He was born in Hondo, Texas on November 12, 1906, Bill Hardt arrived in Globe, Arizona in 1933 when he came to work for the Civilian Conservation Corps. He worked in the copper mines of Globe before establishing the Unique Sporting Goods store, which he owned and operated for more than twenty-five years.

Bill Hardt entered the political arena in the 1950's, serving one term on the Globe City Council and three terms as mayor.

In 1966, Bill Hardt was elected to the Arizona House of Representatives where he served two years before being elected to the Arizona Senate in 1968 and retired in 1996 at the age of ninety. During his tenure in the Senate, he served as chairman of the Appropriations Committee and was twice chairman of the Senate Finance Committee.

Known as "Mr. Rural Arizona", he strove to give a voice to rural Arizonans and to bring economic prosperity to the rural areas he loved.

Bill Hardt received the 1972 Golden Service Award from the Globe-Miami community and was honored by the U.S. Assembly of Government Employees as one of the nation's "Ten Outstanding Legislators" in 1978. In 1981 he received the Others Award from the Salvation Army and in 1989 he received the Western Region Award from the Association of State Safety Officials for his work on dam safety. In 1994, he was inducted in to the Arizona Democratic Party Hall of Fame and in the mid-1990s the University of Arizona established a Community and Rural Development Endowment in his name. In 2001, the Globe Lions Club presented Bill Hardt with the Melvin Jones Foundation Award and the Gila County Board of Supervisors honored him along with other long-standing Arizona politicians by placing plaques of their portraits on the exterior of the Gila County Building.

A Resolution was passed by the 45th Arizona State Legilature during it's 2002 second regular session that honored Senator A.V. Bill Hardt for his long service to the State of Arizona. The Senate Resolution is numbered Senate Resolution 1001.
