Bluefield, Nov 4 - Frank W Surber, aged thirty-four years, for many years a resident of this city, and at one time a resident of Hinton was burned to death in a rooming house near No 1 store of the Pond Creek Coal company, at Hardy, Ky, about 12:30 o'clock Saturday night.
B F Hall, of this city, manager of the Pond Creek Coal Company's store, who accompanied the remains to Bluefield Sunday night, was asleep in the same building, which was destroyed by fire. Surber had been drinking, it seems, and some of the employes rooming in the same building had taken him to his room shortly before midnight. Surber, it was thought later got out of bed and while staggering around the room upset a stove which started the fire. The alarm was given and Mr Hall went up stairs to Surber's room. He opened the door but the heat was so intense he was unable to get Surber out. It was a very stubborn fire and burned for over two hours. The body was charred beyond recognition and was not recovered from the ruins until several hours later.
The remains were brought to Bluefield on train No 16 Sunday night, accompanied by B F Hall and taken to the Hawkins Undertaking Parlors.
The deceased was well known in Bluefield and throughout the coalfield, where he had worked practically all his life. He had only been at Hardy, Ky about two months, having gone there from Landgraff. Surber was employed by the Pond Creek Coal Company at store No 1 as meat cutter.
He is survived by one brother, C H Surber of Alderson, and three sisters, Mrs Maggie Bare, of Alderson; Mrs Laura Jordan, of Huntington, and Mrs Minnie Tolbert, of this city.
The remains were taken to Peterstown yesterday afternoon on train No 2 accompanied by C H Surber, Mrs Tolbert and B F Hall. Interment will be made today.
