Mrs. J. H. Miller, Native Daughter of County, Dies

Mrs. Janet Benston Miller, 80, native daughter of Pierce county, died Tuesday night at her home, 3523 South L street, where she had been confined with an illness contracted soon after her return from a pioneer gathering at Olympia in July.

Mrs. Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Young, was born March 12, 1856, at Fort Nisqually, in the building now known as the granary in the reconstructed Fort Nisqually at Point Defiance. The building at that time was the home of a number of Hudson Bay Fur Company employees.

Her first husband, William Benston, whom she married February 14, 1876, died in October, 1899, and nine years later Mrs. Benston married John H. Miller of Illinois. Her first marriage was performed by one of the first justices in Pierce county, and the second by Rev. G. L. Cuddy, a pioneer clergyman. Mr. Miller died in 1915.

Mrs. Miller lived in Pierce county until 1906, in Seattle from 1906 to 1918, in California from 1918 to 1922, and in this county again until her death. Surviving are two daughters, Miss Beatrice Benston, who resided with her, and Mrs. F. A. Carlson of Graham; a son, George W. Benston of Puyallup; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mrs. Miller was a member of the Women's Benefit Association.

Buckley-King will announce arrangements.
