Charles Nathaniel Midkiff was born on the 27th day of August 1894, in Pottawatomie Co, Oklahoma Territory. His father was John Franklin Midkiff (1870 – 1926), his mother was Ella Lydia Willis (1876 – 1905). When Charle's mother died he was only eleven years old.

Charles was the eldest, he had three younger sisters: Edna Suzan Midkiff (1904 - 1960)and Myrtle May Midkiff (1897-1980) and Ivy Ella Hurst Midkiff (1902-1980).

His maternal grandparents were Nathaniel Perdue Willis (1852 – 1943)
and Francis Elizabeth Jones (1854 – 1933)

His paternal grandparents were Charles Anderson Midkiff(1839 – 1919)
and Mary Emeline Wilbourn (1846 – 1923)

In Cluster County Idaho, at the age of 20, he married Marie Marcella Wells on the 3rd of August 1915. Charles was strong, athletic, and employed as a professional boxer. His wife was often afraid of his boxing, but Charles was good at what he did. There is a family story that he came home one night after a fight, and dumped a pile of money on his wife's head. It was also said that Charles bought his wife her first pair of shoes.

Charles and Marie went on to have several children, one son and five daughters:

Charles Nathanial Midkiff (1916-1996)
Edna Marie Midkiff (1918 - 1969)
Margarette Edith Midkiff (1921 - 17 June 1928)
Deleath Midkiff (1926 - 1988)
Marcella Midkiff (1929 - 1994)
Netta Midkiff (1937 -1912).

In 1926, his father John Franklin Midkiff passed away in Yakima Washington.

On the 17th of June, 1928 an event occurred, changing Charles life, leading him into a life of grief and alcoholism. His youngest daughter, Margarette drown in Bothell Washington.

The family were out at what we believe to be the Sammamish river. Margarette turned to her mother and said, "I want to be with Jesus." Marie said to her daughter, "No, you must stay here with me."

Margarette went missing. She made her way to the river and drown. It was a pain which the family never recovered, and haunts many generations to this day. Nearly ten years after her death, Netta was born on Margarette's birthday.

Marie and Charles eventually divorced. All those years of boxing took a toll on Charles's heath and appearance. He opened several successful newsstands, selling papers in a park near the Pike Place market. He earned additional money cutting wood and allowing people to throw pies at his face.

Charles died on Christmas day, 1957.

His daughter's always spoke fondly of their father. Patricia loved him very much. Netta would spend week-ends with her father, leaning the accounting of her father's newspaper business. Charles took any job he needed to take in order to provide for his family. He was hard working, hot tempered, and loved his children very much.
