Eureka - Funeral service for Ferdinand "Ferdy" Hieb, 87, of Eureka will be 10 a.m., Monday, Aug. 8, 2005, at Zion Lutheran Church at Eureka. There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. Sunday and visitation will be from noon-6 p.m. at the funeral home and for one hour prior to the service at the church. He died Aug. 4, 2005. Ferdinand Hieb, son of Frederick and Christina (Job) Hieb was born March 29, 1918, on the family farm in McPherson County near Hosmer. This is where he grew up and attended country school. He worked for Works Progress Administration in McPherson County during the 1930s. He was united in marriage to Christine Huber on Aug. 31, 1938, at Hosmer. They started farming in McPherson County. In 1955, they moved to Hosmer where he did electrical and plumbing work until the mid 1970s. He semi-retired, but, also sold insurance for various companies and continued to farm. In 2001, they moved to Eureka. He entered Avera Eureka Health Care Center in 2004. His wife died Feb. 25, 2005. He enjoyed old time music, playing his guitar, playing cards and square dancing. He and his wife were able to spend many recreational hours together bowling and for those efforts; they won many trophies. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church at Eureka and St. John's Lutheran Church at Hosmer. Also, he was a member of Hosmer Civic Club and Hosmer Volunteer Fire Department. Survivors include three sons: Merle (Edna) Hieb of Eureka, Ron (Carol) Hieb of Sioux Falls and Rev. Orville (Sherida) Hieb of Andover, Minn.; one daughter, Rhonda (Ron) Strouckel of Roscoe; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. His parents, wife, three brothers, four sisters and one granddaughter preceded him in death. Honorary Casketbearers will be his grandchildren, Elyse Hieb, Allison Hieb, Nicole Gruebele, Morgan Gruebele, Brian Hieb, Elana Hieb, Sean Fantroy and Danielle Fantroy. Casketbearers will be Todd (Priscilla) Hieb, Kim (David) Gruebele, Troy (Jenny) Hieb, Kristy (Cliff) Fantroy, Jessie Strouckel, Lindsey Strouckel, Nathan Hieb, Rebecca (Greg) Roeder and Andrew Hieb. Carlsen Funeral Home of Eureka have been entrusted with arrangements.
