In the 1870 census, 40-yr-old William Powell is designated as "laborer" in the household of George Smith- 61, and his wife Rosanna, aged 60.

In the 1880 census, the first to designate relationships to the head of the household, he is designated the "step-son" of George Smith. William is now 48; George, 72, and Rosanna, 71. William was said to have been born in PA, as was his father. His mother was supposedly born in Maryland - as Rosanna Smith was recorded to have been.

Extracts from his Civil War pension file:

Served in the Company A, 40th PA Infantry, Civil War, from July 29, 1861 to June 13, 1864. Next served in Company A of the 81st PA Infantry, Aug. 23, 1864 to June 15, 1865.

Injured four times during his service with the 40th PA.
1. Gaines Mill, VA, June 27, 1862, ball entering lower lobe of right ear, passing beneath the surface tissues of the neck, and exiting the back of the neck, just to the right of the spine. Was also taken prisoner on that date, and remained so in Richmond until released July 20, 1862.
2. Struck by a shell fragment at Fredericksburg, Dec. 13, 1862, the fragment injuring the outside of the left knee, causing a large scar, and (eventually) greatly impairing the action of the hamstring muscle.
3. Hit by two buckshot on the outside of the left hip, behind the great trochanter (entering the left buttock), at Gettysburg, July 2, 1863. The buckshot were not extracted.
4. Struck in the left hand at the Wilderness, May 6, 1864, leaving no impairment.
