Philip Henry Hill, 74, of 1427 Sweetbriar Road died Friday at St. Francis Hospital after a long illness.
He was the son of former Kanawha County Sheriff Bonner H. Hill. He was Charleston city solicitor from 1935 to 1942 and was active in Republican politics. He was the former president an chairman of the board of Thomas and Hill Co, retiring in 1974. He was a former partner in the law firm of Porter, Hill, Hamb, Williams and Poffenbarger.
He was executive director of the Charleston Housing Authority after its founding in 1937 until 1942. He was a commander with the U.S. Naval Reserve, a World War II veteran and president of the fifth district of the Navy League of the United States.
He also was a member of the board of Empire Federal Savings and Loan Assn.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Charleston, the Elks Lodge, the Masons, Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity, the Navy League, the Exchange Club, the American Bar Assn. and the West Virginia Bar Assn. He was a lifelong resident of Kanawha County.
Surviving: wife, Beatrice Jenks; daughter, Mrs. A.J. Peck, Jr. of Charleston; son, Philip Bonner of Des Moines, Iowa; stepdaughters, Mrs. Caroline Boge of Chico, Calif., Mrs. Dennis Broglio of Charleston, Mrs. Jeremy Gabell of Charleston, Miss Linda Steahly of Washington, D.C.; stepsons, Charles Steahly of Charleston; sister, Wilmot Hill of Charleston.
Memorial service will held Sunday at 3 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. J. Harrell Harper officiating. The body has been cremated.
There will be no visitation. The family suggests memorials be made to the Loyalty Permanent Endowment Fund of West Virginia University Alumni Assn. Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home is
in charge of arrangements.
