A 16-year-old Eagle Grove youth died early Saturday morning following an accidental shooting incident which occurred here Friday evening.

Dennis Duane (Beaver) Terry, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Terry, died about 5:25 a.m. Saturday morning at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines from a gunshot wound in his head.

The apparent accidental shooting occurred at approximately 8:25 p.m. Friday night. Terry and three other 16-year-old youths were present in the Emil Hanus home at 903 North Eastern Avenue when the shooting took place. Alone by themselves in the home, the youths were examining a lever-action .22 caliber rifle when it discharged, wounding the victim.

A side report by the youth who was holding the rifle when the shooting occurred said that he did not touch the trigger of the weapon before it discharged. Apparently the hammer of the rifle was partially pulled back and accidentally tripped, causing the shell to fire. Following the incident the weapon was returned to the gun rack.

A call was made to the Eagle Grove police department and the youth was rushed to Trinity West Hospital in Fort Dodge where he was immediately transferred by an emergency mobile unit to the Des Moines hospital.

The shooting accident was investigated jointly by local police officials, the Wright County sheriff's department and an officer of the Iowa Bureau of Criminal Investigation. The matter is still under investigation.

Services for the Terry youth were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church with burial In Rose Hill Cemetery.

The Rev. Arthur W. Anderson officiated the service. Paulbearers included John Wright, Mark Cranston, Paul Wright, Vance Nelson, Bob Wright and Richard Anderson.

Survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Terry, four brothers, Jonnie, Webster City; Jimmie, Craig, Michael and one sister, Linda all at home.

Dennis John Terry was born at Webster City on Oct. 24, 1956. The family moved to Eagle Grove shortly after this time where he attended the Eagle Grove Community Schools.

Dennis (Beaver) Terry, who was a junior student at the local high school, would have celebrated his 17th birthday yesterday (Wednesday).
