Nancy Elizabeth Hawthorne, a daughter of Robert and Priscilla [Gibson] Hawthorne, was born in the bounds of Winnsboro in Fairfield County, South Carolina.

Twice married, first to William Harper Carter and after his death married William Greene Austin; with whom she had three known children: Lillian, James Hawthorne and William Wade.
