Mr. Elish Smith died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Fergus Taylor, in this city on January 17, 1910. Owing to advanced age he had grown quite feeble but on the morning of his death he was in his usual health and died suddenly while sitting in an easy chair talking to his daughter.
The funeral was held at the home on Saturday at two o'clock pm, Rev. Van Dusen of the Baptist church officiating, and the remains were interred in Union Grove cemetery beside his wife who died Feb. 1, 1895.
Mr. Smith was born at Concord, New Hampshire, Aug. 2, 1827, and there married Miss Elizabeth Drew, and with her came to Wisconsin in 1856, settling in Waldwick, Iowa County, where the family resided until 1864, when they moved to Darlington where he has since resided.
To Mr. and Mrs. Smith were born seven children, three sons and four daughters. The sons are all dead. His daughters are Mrs. Annie Moyer, Monona, Iowa, Mrs. Fergus Taylor of this city, Mrs. Maria Biers of Omaha, Nebraska, and Miss May of Chippewa Falls, Wis.
Elish Smith was a man of the strictest integrity, sterling honesty, an indulgent father, a true husband, a loyal friend and a good citizen. He possessed a fund of quaint humor and was universally beloved and respected.
He had lived beyond the allotted age of man, and in the last conversation we had with him he said: " I am living on borrowed time." The Republican Journal joins in extending sympathy to the afflicted family.
